When pupils are secure in all of the phonic phases, they no longer take part in daily phonics sessions. Instead, they have a daily spelling session, focusing on age-appropriate spelling patterns and rules. At Therfield First School, we use the Essential Spellings programme for these sessions.
Pupils in Years 1-4 take home weekly spellings to learn ready for their weekly test. For Year 1 pupils, or where pupils are still taking part in daily phonics lessons, these are based on the sounds/patterns/words being looked during their phonic sessions that week. For Year 2-4 pupils, these are taken from the Essential Spellings programme, based on the in-class weekly focus.
