“Bringing Learning to Life”

Rooks Nest Class (KS2)

Design and Technology in Key Stage 2

In Rooks Nest, we undertake two detailed design and technology units/projects each year.

In 2022-2023, our projects are:

  • Mechanical Scenes of Ancient Egypt
  • The Great Bread Bakeoff

During 2021-22, we planned, designed and made:

  • a battery powered light (Linked to our 'Robots' topic)
  • a kite (Lined to our 'Need for Speed' topic)

Design and technology topics are linked to the main class topic where possible and are taught through practical lessons where children build upon existing skills whilst learning new technical knowledge.  Units of work are well-structured and move through the process of designing, making and evaluating.

Mechanical Scenes of Ancient Egypt

For this product, we used our knowledge of our overall topic "Ancient Egypt" to help us to design a moving scene. Our design brief was to create a mechanical, moving scene of Ancient Egypt for families and children to use in a local museum.

We explored different mechanisms and learned about levers, linkages and pivots. Then we designed and created our own scenes before evaluating our final products. Take a look at the process!
