“Bringing Learning to Life”
In Honeypot Class, we have a Design and Technology focus in two topics across the year All About Me and Going Places. However, the children are always able to use the building and modelling equipment during choosing times to create whatever they please. An example of this is the space rocket they built using the Straws. A range of recycled materials are available for children to use to make 'junk models' during child-initiated learning sessions. Children are supported to be independent and creative when joining components together, problem solving what will work best.
All About Me:
In this topic, we use local produce to make and prepare apple crumble. We harvest the apples from the tree in the school field, clean, peel and cut them ready to go at the bottom of our crumble mix. We then weigh out the crumble ingredients to sprinkle over the top. We carefully use knives and learn about the importance of food hygiene when cooking. The children take home a delicious apple crumble to share with their family. Yummy scrummy!
Children also design and make fruit kebabs linked to our maths focus of repeating patterns.
Going Places:
In this topic, children use recycled items to create a 'junk model boat'. As a class, we discuss the different ways of attaching items, how to use objects to create a desired outcome and make cross curricular links to floating and sinking in science. We encourage the children to think about the most appropriate material to allow their boat to float.
