Welcome to our Class page!
It is wonderful to see the children using these learning areas in different ways which support their own learning styles and interests. As class adults, we constantly support the children’s interests by adapting areas within the classroom – this encourages the children to continue to explore, investigate and learn through their own excitement.
The children's first year of school is extremely special and important. In Honeypot Class we ensure that they gain confidence and courage in the foundation skills to move happily throughout the school. During their time in Reception, children will continue their journey of learning to read and write. We aim to provide a print rich learning environment for our pupils and to encourage them to make marks in all areas of the curriculum. Children begin taking home books to read with parents and carers within the first weeks of school and begin to have daily phonics sessions. At Therfield First School, we use carefully matched books to children's phonic phase and the sounds that they are learning in class. We also have a wide range of PM Books which are banded into colour groups to support comprehension skills. Within phonics sessions children will be introduced to the letters and blends of letters within the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phases. These sessions are supported by visuals, songs and rhymes from Read, Write Inc. Children also begin their mathematical journey, learning to recognise numbers and shapes and then assign meaning to these numbers, understanding ‘the threeness of three!’
We are very proud of our exciting and engaging learning environment, where we have a free flow between our classroom and outside space. There you will find lots of different areas designed to stimulate curiosity, awe and wonder and promote high quality child-initiated learning opportunities.
