The Curriculum at Therfield First School

The curriculum we teach is taken directly from the New National Curriculum (September 2014) for the children in Key Stage One and Lower Key Stage Two.  In the Foundation Stage, the Statutory Framework for the EYFS (September 2014) is followed and therefore meets the legal requirements for schools.

We believe that our children should have the opportunity to learn through a rich, exciting and engaging creative curriculum.  This offers a wide range of learning experiences whilst providing enriching opportunities to develop skills for life.

Our creative curriculum ensures excellent coverage through our 2-year rolling programmes of class topics (KS1 and Lower KS2).  Each area of the curriculum is monitored by a subject leader who is responsible for ensuring that their subject has high profile across the school.

Phonics and Reading Schemes:

As a school we use the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme to teach phonics and spelling.  Children are taught according to the letters and sounds phases across year groups.  Our children have access to a wide range of books to support their reading development.  The reading schemes in use by the school include Oxford Reading Tree, Big Cat Phonics, Songbird and Project X.
